National Trails System
The National Trails System consists of 23 national scenic and historic trails and over 800 national recreation trails. Eight National Scenic Trails, including the Appalachian Trail, protect continuous scenic corridors for outdoor recreation, and fifteen National Historic Trails, including the Lewis and Clark Trail, reflect historical eras and routes used for exploration, migration, and trade.

National Recreation Trails
Over 800 trails—available for public use and ranging from less than a mile to 485 miles in length—have been designated as National Recreation Trails (NRTs) on federal, state, local and privately owned lands. Visit their web site for application procedures and an online searchable NRT database.

True or false? When hiking, you should walk through puddles on the trail. It's true! By going around puddles, you may widen the path and trample vegetation - and that's not good. And it's just one bit of knowledge kids take away after participating in the Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids (PEAK) program, based on the seven Leave No Trace principles of environmental awareness.

PEAK is a program designed to teach children about responsibility in the outdoors. REI created PEAK in partnership with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, and offers the free program to educators and organizations with an interest in responsible use of the outdoors. Read more about this exciting program and how you can arrange for a presentation.
