Hiking 101 - Trail Photography
info

Capture your favorite hiking moments and scenery by bringing along a camera on your next hike. Today's digital cameras are small, lightweight, and can store hundreds of photos without you having to pack extra film. And don't miss a shot by keeping your camera in an easy-to-access, waterproof pouch on your hip belt or sternum strap.

Outdoor Photography tips:

  • Photograph people and places in early mornings and evenings for dramatic lighting and improved color.
  • Turn off your flash and use just the ambient light; you may want to use a tripod or even a rock to prevent blurriness.
  • Use the rule of thirds: don't center the subject of your photo but position it to the left, right, or upper or lower third. Rarely will you ever want a horizon in the center of your photograph.
  • Include a second subject in your photo to achieve depth and scale.
  • This autumn don't stop photographing in windy, wet, or overcast conditions - each may enhance the colors and feeling you're trying to capture.
Quote of the Month

"The trails of the world be countless,

And most of the trails be tried;

You tread on the heels of the many,

Till you come where the ways divide;

And one lies safe in the sunlight,

And the other is dreary and wan,

Yet you look aslant at the Lone Trail,

And the Lone Trail lures you on."
